Your Change Attitude—And How to Work with People Who Might See it a Different Way

What is your attitude toward change? Are you:

  • The Trailblazer: The trailblazer likes to initiate change. He or she tires easily of doing things the same old way and will often change things just to keep from being bored.
  • The Early Adopter: The early adopter has an open attitude toward change. He or she is quick to see the advantages in doing things in a new way and is likely to be one of the first to volunteer to try an innovation.
  • The Skeptical Questioner: The skeptical questioner wants to know the costs and benefits of making a change before jumping on the bandwagon. He or she needs to be convinced that the change will make things better, not just different.
  • The Traditionalist: The traditionalist is especially resistant to change for the sake of change. He or she sees stability and consistency as important and will stand firm to conserve these value

In this article, Barnes & Conti CEO Kim Barnes begins by identifying the four attitudes that most people have regarding change in the workplace. Kim continues to discuss how you as a change leader can tap into, incorporate, and find the value in each of these attitude, especially when the outlooks differ from your own attitude towards change. According to Kim, the change process may take longer, but when you get there, “you’ll look around and find that most people are there with you.”
