Chicago in Flames: Currier & Ives Featured Article: Dealing with Disruptive Change (excerpt)

by B. Kim Barnes

NOTE: This article was published in the July issue of T+D Magazine and on the ASTD website. We wanted to share it with you in case you did not catch it.

As I write, we are again dealing with the shock of a terrorist attack on American soil: the bombings at the finish line of the Boston Marathon. We learn, once again, that the most important thing any of us experiencing devastating change can do is to be active in the healing process for ourselves and others. We need to transform energy tied up in anger, fear, and stress into productive and positive action. I first learned this lesson years ago when a huge fire raging through the hills of Oakland, California, destroyed our house. We were fortunate—we lost property, not lives. We were well insured. We rebuilt our house and moved on.

In the aftermath of the fire, I paid attention to my reactions and those of family and friends. I began to see how this experience could be a powerful metaphor that would help me, perhaps others, gain understanding about dealing with disruptive change—both at home and at work.

Recovery plan

The following actions had real value for adapting to and taking practical action toward recovery from a disruptive change. The first four involve the past, the fifth moves you from the past to the future, and the sixth focuses on the future. Having created a path from the past to a positive future, you’re now free to be active and productive in the present; the rest of the actions are focused on the here and now...

Managing Innovation class in MexicoMy Experience Training Managing Innovation with Nissan’s Leadership Group.

By Marilu Aguilar Salamanca

My company, MAS TALENTO ORGANIZACIONAL, based in Mexico, recently had the opportunity to facilitate the one-day Managing Innovation workshop to a group of Nissan employees.

Managing Innovation teaches a management process for sorting out the best ideas and bringing them to fruition in order to create value for the organization.

What was most interesting to me while facilitating the workshop was observing how we were able to apply each exercise to help the group solve their industry specific needs. For example, the “Design a Fridge” exercise challenged the participants to figure out a way to get the public to want to buy new refrigerators in a bad economy. We asked the participants to apply this exercise to the automobile industry, and it helped them immensely.

The participants appreciated being able to apply their own innovation projects to the course. As one of them said: “Now I know the direction I must take in order to be successful….”

We are looking forward to the follow up at the end of the year and to seeing how they did with their innovation projects.

Recipe: Kim Barnes’ Simple and Authentic Guacamole

Kim has traveled to Mexico quite a bit to work with our partners. Some years ago she brought back this simple and delicious way of making guacamole

Ingredients:

  • Ripe avocados
  • Pinch of salt
  • Finely minced garlic
  • Fresh squeezed lime juice

Method:

  1. Peel and pit the avocados, mash to desired consistency.
  2. Add the salt and mix in the other ingredients, to taste.

One large avocado should serve 2-4 people. Guacamole is terrific not just with chips, but as a condiment with all sorts of Mexican dishes.
