Kim Barnes and Nelson Soken to Speak

Barnes & Conti CEO, Kim Barnes, and Chief Innovation Strategist, Nelson Soken, Ph.D will be speaking at the ATD 2019 Conference and Expo this year in Washington, D.C.

Kim Barnes will be presenting on the topic of constructive debate*: “Building Better Ideas: The Value of Constructive Debate,” on May 19, 2019 at 10:45 am.

Session Description:

Constructive debate is the exchange and exploration of ideas in a way that promotes innovation, high-quality decisions, broad participation, and positive, productive relationships. As a trusted adviser, partner, consultant, coach, change leader, or facilitator, you can promote a culture where “constructive debate” becomes the norm, and conflict avoidance, political gamesmanship, suboptimal decision making, and groupthink are no longer tolerated.

This session will help you to:

  • Facilitate group and team collaboration in building more robust ideas that can lead to value-creating innovations
  • Encourage and support lively, open discussions and debates instead of “the meeting after the meeting” where real opinions are expressed
  • Lead culture change that values diversity of opinion and creative controversy and discourages defensiveness, political expediency, and mediocrity

Nelson Soken will be focusing on innovation in a session entitled, “Design Thinking: An Approach to Transform Your Organization and Improve Outcomes,” on May 19, 2018 at 3:00 pm.

Session Description:

Why don’t organizational change efforts yield expected results? Learn how to approach problems from a design-thinking perspective and build an initial plan of action to address complex challenges. The session will define design principles, identify organizational barriers, and provide an opportunity to apply the principles: Ask the right questions, empathize, collaborate, prototype, observe, and connect the dots with the user in the center.

This session will help you to:

  • Understand how human cognition and behavior impacts how people absorb change
  • Explore the principles and tools of design thinking and learn how organizations across industries have implemented them
  • Apply simple design thinking tools to an individual challenge and look at ways to incorporate practices in your organization
