From Expert to Trainer:
Skills for Leading Learning Sessions

Based on the best practices of master trainers, this intensive two-day workshop provides a short course for new or occasional trainers in helping others learn new skills and practices. You will discover how to transfer skills or change behavior rather than merely present information.

Learn to organize your expertise with a focus on the learner. Working on a real world opportunity, you will practice clarifying goals and structuring the time to assure that new skills will transfer to the work setting. You will learn how to offer information in a credible and engaging way, facilitate discussions, and design effective skill practice sessions and job aids.

This workshop is designed to model effective training techniques, using the same approaches, structures, and methods that are being taught. The session includes short, informative presentations, individual and group exercises to apply skills, and the opportunity to demonstrate the skills and receive feedback from the instructor and other participants. Class size is small so that you will receive personal time and attention.

Participants will:

  • Assess their skills and identify development objectives.
  • Design and practice delivering a learning session that achieves performance objectives, using their own content material.
  • Learn how to engage participants by using a variety of learning activities and job aids.
  • Select and demonstrate appropriate communication skills to facilitate interaction and learning.
  • Learn to handle classic trainer dilemmas and challenges.
  • Create a development plan for continuous improvement.

Who Should Participate?

This workshop is for subject matter experts who have the responsibility for leading learning sessions in their technical/professional area or for members of project implementation teams who must introduce new processes or procedures. In order to provide intensive personal feedback and coaching, workshops are limited to eight participants. The workshop can be customized.
